Q: Does FoxyMelody have ownership rights to my work?
A: No. It is your blood, sweat, and tears, and we intend to keep it that way. The rights to the songs and recordings are yours and/or your publishers. We provide a service to you. You are our customers, not our property.
Q: Are you a music store?
A: No. FoxyMelody does not sell your music from our website. Rather, we are a distributor, also known as an aggregator. Our function is to get your music onto the major online music services, such as iTunes, eMusic, Rhapsody, and MusicNet, just to name a few.
Q: Does my music get sent to every online music service?
A: For the most part. There are a few stores that are specific to a genre, and only in that case will we hold sending it. We aren't going to send hip hop to a store that sells punk, for one example.
Q: What do I need to utilize your services?
A: You need to compile your tracks together into a release, and that release needs cover art. All you need is one track. Once you have put this together, sign up with FoxyMelody.
Q: How is my music distributed?
A: Leave the technical side of things to us. You simply need to send us 4 copies of the completed work, cover art, and track names. We will convert it into the relevant formats and send it on its merry way to cyberspace.
Q: How soon will my work be posted on the digital music services?
A: We will begin the conversion of your recordings to the respective formats within a week of receiving them. After that, we send them to the music services, who can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months to post your work.
Q: Does FoxyMelody do physical distribution as well?
A: No. The Head Foxes do not believe that physical distribution is right for smaller artists and labels. It is quite expensive to print and package CDs only to have them sit in the closet at a record store. Without a large marketing budget, physical distribution is not practical. Digital Distribution has very little cost involved and can produce endless monetary returns.
Q: What if my album is already distributed by another digital distributor?
A: Due to the nature of the online music services, you can only go through 1 distributor per album. If the album you wish to distribute through FoxyMelody is distributed to iTunes, etc through somebody else, you must cancel your arrangement with that distributor. However, if this is a different album, you can use FoxyMelody for as many as you like.
Q: How do I get paid?
A: Make that money! FoxyMelody will pay you via PayPal.
Q: Can you take my monthly fee directly from my sales?
A: Not yet. However, you have asked and we have listened. FoxyMelody is working on a system to make this happen.
Q: Can I set the prices on the digital music services?
A: No. The digital music services set their own prices. FoxyMelody has no say in how they decide this.
Q: Why isn't my music appearing on Pandora?
A: Pandora is a selective service, and only tracks that their programming director feels should go into the mix make the cut. We send all submissions for consideration, from there it's out of our hands
Q: What are Copyrights and do I need one?
A: Copyrights protect your work and ensure no one else will receive credit or royalties due to you for your own work. You should definitely consider copyrighting your work for your own protection, but it is not necessary to have them to utilize our services. We HIGHLY recommend copyrights. Visit copyright.gov for more information.
Q: What are samples and what is sample clearance?
A: Samples are using other peoples’ work in conjunction with your own. Samples must be cleared so that the original owner of the sample is aware that you are using their work and it is authorized. If you do have samples in your work, please get them authorized. If you don’t you may be facing lawsuits in the future. FoxyMelody takes no responsibility in regards to using unauthorized samples.
Q: What if I get picked up by a major label, am I legally bound to you?
A: Nope. We are not in the business of trapping you. If you get picked up, and we wish you the best should this occur, you can cancel our services within 30 days notice. We need these 30 days to get you taken off each site
Q: How do I cancel with FoxyMelody?
A: Cancel? Bummer. Maybe a label picked you up; maybe the service isn’t for you anymore. Either way, we understand. To cancel, you need to send us a written letter (how old school…) to:
FoxyMelody Digital Distribution
ATTN: Cancellation
270 W 17th St, #6F
New York, NY
Please include your name, artist/band/label name, album or albums you wish to take down, and your reason for cancellation. Please allow 30 days upon FoxyMelody’s receipt of your letter for full cancellation. It takes a while to get your music down from all those networks.
Q: Do you sell our contact information to a third party?
A: No. If we feel that an organization would like your information for a beneficial reason, Foxymelody will seek your permission before releasing any information.
